Safe Schools has developed an approach to behaviour support in schools called Trauma informed Positive Behavioural Interventions and Support (TiPBIS). TiPBIS blends trauma informed practice with School Wide Positive Behavioural Interventions and Support (SWPBIS). It is inherently proactive in its orientation. (for more information on how the SWPBIS aspect of our unified theory works, click here.
Proactive Approaches
Proactive interventions take two forms, proactive preventative and proactive developmental. This means that as well as creating capable environments within which all students can thrive (‘preventative’), those with additional vulnerabilities for challenging behaviour are also learning new skills, behaviours and coping strategies (‘developmental’). TiPBIS is applicable within general and special education settings (SEN, SEMH).
De-escalation and Defusion Strategies
TiPBIS also includes training in trauma-informed and functionally related de-escalation strategies.
Furthermore whilst lots of training providers teach ‘last resort’ strategies (e.g. physical restraint) for dangerous or aggressive behaviours, uniquely we also teach ‘first resort’ strategies. These are evidence based non-restrictive reactive strategies that are proven to be effective in redirecting even extremely elevated behaviours thus avoiding the need for restraint.
Restrictive Physical Interventions
We also teach restrictive physical interventions and breakaway techniques as genuine ‘last resort’ reactive strategies when this is required.
