Course Outline

As with all our programmes the emphasis is on staff responses being centred on empathy and compassion set within the broader context of the principles of TIPBIS.

This course focuses on equipping staff with a practical evidence based toolkit for de-escalating behaviours described as challenging.

This includes ‘precursor’ level behaviours all the way through to crisis level behaviours.

Uniquely we include teaching participants ‘first resort’ reactive strategies for crisis level behaviours. These are often overlooked, leaving staff no alternative than to shift to ‘last resort’ strategies (restraint) where their duty of care might be in jeopardy. These None-Aversive Reactive Strategies (NARS) have been proven to be effective for crisis level behaviours (Lavigna) in obviating the need to use physical restraint.

Participants will also learn strategies to help them remain low arousal when supporting distressed and dysregulated students.

Participants will understand the importance of post incident re-attunement when working with children affected by ACE’s and how to do this.

Staff will leave feeling more empowered and confident in supporting distressed and dysregulated students.
