Course description

This two day intermediate course builds on the foundation level course or prior subject matter knowledge of participants. Participants will take a deeper dive into the causes and impact of ACE’s and how trauma informed educators can facilitate recovery. Models for working therapeutically with students impacted by trauma are covered as are specific tools for improving quality of life and wellbeing (Hughes, Golding and Seligman).

Participants will also take a more in depth look at the 3 tier system of PBIS. There is a particular focus on tier 2 and 3 interventions designed to meet the needs of pupils more vulnerable to behaviours that challenge. Participants will be introduced to the idea of basic functional assessment will be able to describe the 5 functions of behaviour. They will be able to apply this knowledge to formulating effective individualised positive behaviour support plans (Horner & O’Neil).

Trauma informed low arousal approaches to distressed and aggressive behaviour are covered and staff will leave with a tool-kit for redirecting and de-escalating precursor and crisis level behaviours. This includes several non-aversive reactive strategies (NARS) as substitutes for physical restraint (Lavigna 2009).

Outcomes include greater staff confidence in supporting students with more complex behavioural needs and improved capabilities in promoting greater inclusion across the whole school community.
